8-Hour Workday Calculator
Common workday end times
Based on a standard 8-hour day with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break (total shift: 8.5 hours):
| Start Time | Work Hours | Break | End Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6:00 AM | 8h | 30 min | 2:30 PM |
| 7:00 AM | 8h | 30 min | 3:30 PM |
| 8:00 AM | 8h | 30 min | 4:30 PM |
| 9:00 AM | 8h | 30 min | 5:30 PM |
| 10:00 AM | 8h | 30 min | 6:30 PM |
| 7:00 AM | 10h | 30 min | 5:30 PM |
| 8:00 AM | 10h | 30 min | 6:30 PM |
| 6:00 PM | 12h | 60 min | 7:00 AM |
Overnight shifts (e.g., 6:00 PM → 7:00 AM) are calculated correctly across midnight.
What counts as an 8-hour workday?
An 8-hour workday means completing 8 hours of actual work time — not counting unpaid breaks. If you take a 30-minute unpaid lunch, your total time at work is 8.5 hours (8 hours of work + 30 minutes of break). Your shift starts when you clock in and ends when you complete 8 hours of work plus any break time.
The 8-hour workday became the standard through the labor movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, popularized by Henry Ford's adoption of the 40-hour, 5-day workweek in 1926. Today, it remains the legal standard workday in most countries, with overtime triggered for hours beyond 8/day or 40/week.
8 hours of work + 30-minute lunch. Most common schedule in office environments.
10 hours of work + 30-minute lunch. Works 4 days/week (4×10) for a 3-day weekend.
12 hours of work + 30-minute break. Common in healthcare, manufacturing, and emergency services.
Flexible schedule types
Modern workplaces increasingly offer alternatives to the traditional 9-to-5. Here are the most common flexible schedule structures and how to calculate end times for each.
Work 4 days at 10 hours each, totaling 40 hours per week. If you start at 7:00 AM with a 30-minute lunch, you finish at 5:30 PM — and get Fridays (or Mondays) off.
Choose your own start time within a range (e.g., 7:00–10:00 AM), but still complete your full 8 hours. The end time shifts with your start time. Great for avoiding rush-hour commutes.
Work divided into two periods separated by a long break (e.g., 8:00–12:00 and 16:00–20:00). Common in hospitality and retail. Total work time still adds up to the standard shift length.
Alternating between day, evening, and night shifts on a regular cycle. End times vary depending on which shift you're working. Common in healthcare, emergency services, and manufacturing.
How breaks affect your end time
Every minute of unpaid break time extends your workday. A 30-minute lunch adds 30 minutes to your shift; a 60-minute lunch adds an hour. Paid rest breaks (typically under 20 minutes in the US) are counted as work time and don't extend your day.
| Break Duration | Paid? | Extends Day? | If start 9:00 AM, end time |
|---|---|---|---|
| No break | — | No | 5:00 PM |
| 15 min rest | Paid (US) | No | 5:00 PM |
| 30 min lunch | Unpaid | Yes | 5:30 PM |
| 60 min lunch | Unpaid | Yes | 6:00 PM |
| 30 min + 15 min rest | Mixed | +30 min | 5:30 PM |
Your total daily time commitment
Your workday end time is just one part of your daily schedule. To understand your total time commitment, add your commute time on both ends. A 30-minute commute each way adds an hour to your day — making an "8-hour workday" actually a 9.5-hour day when you include commuting and lunch.
| Commute in | 30 min |
| Morning prep & setup | 15 min |
| Work time | 8h 00 min |
| Lunch break (unpaid) | 30 min |
| Commute out | 30 min |
| Total | 9h 45 min |
| Commute in | 0 min |
| Morning setup | 5 min |
| Work time | 8h 00 min |
| Lunch break (unpaid) | 30 min |
| Commute out | 0 min |
| Total | 8h 35 min |
